The TBZ and TGZ formats (or tar.gz and tar.bz2, respectively) are used for compression and decompression of files in Unix systems. In Linux , these formats are natively recognized and the files can be easily extracted - as with ZIP in Windows . However, if you are Microsoft PC user, you will need a third party application, such as free and powerful 7-Zip. Check out how to use it to uncompressed TGZ and TBZ files in the Microsoft system.
Step 1: Download and install the application 7-Zip. Then, access the list of installed applications, click the right mouse button on the "7-Zip File Manager" and run the application as administrator;
Step 2: If an UAC message appears, confirm opening the app by clicking "Yes";
Step 3: In the 7-Zip main window, open the "Tools" menu and click "Options ...";
Step 4: In the "System" tab, check the items "tbz" and "tgz" - or click "Select All" if you prefer. Then press "OK";
Step 5: Thus, files with TBZ and TGZ extension will be recognized by the system. Double-click to open them in 7-Zip. To extract a file, click "Extract", select a destination folder and click "OK";
Step 6: You can also click the right mouse button on a file, access the menu of the 7-Zip and choose "Extract Here" option to extract the file in the same folder.
With 7-Zip, and this simple tip, you can extract TBZ, TGZ files and various other formats.
