Wiko Slide: hands on review

The Chinese foundry MediaTek has finally made the adjustments necessary to equip smartphones to its customers in the latest version of Android, making virtually silent on the latest Jelly Bean (4.3). Which is in practice fairly good, since it does not delay any longer the arrival of the latest version as of the Google OS.

A 5.5-inch screen is not 720p?
As we shall see, the presence of KitKat in this smartphone changes the game slightly. Not at the functional level, but especially in performance. Because fortunately, Kitkat is lighter than Jelly Bean. Thus, while retaining a platform almost identical to many other smartphones (or its range of low-cost competition) Wiko manages to avoid the annoyances we encountered during our test flash Rainbow about a month ago. Here in detail the data sheet:

Android 4.4.2 KitKat
IPS qHD screen (960 x 540 pixels) 5.5-inch with a resolution of 201 pixels per inch
Quad-core processor clocked at 1.3 GHz MT6582
GPU Mali-400
1GB RAM
4GB of internal memory (expandable with microSD)
8 megapixel camera
2MP Webcam
Dual SIM
Connectivity H + (21 Mb / s) / WiFi / Bluetooth 4.0
2350 mAh battery
Thickness: 8.9 mm
Weight: 166 grams

With a few small details, we are faced with the specifications of Wiko Rainbow (chipset, RAM, storage, connectivity, camera, webcam). Some detail the differences. The size of the screen of course, which goes from 5 to 5.5 inches, but the resolution of the screen that descends from a reputable 720p qHD very limited. The resolution thus reached 200 dots per inch. Which is not very good: on the same panel, LG offers the QHD (2560 x 1440), for a resolution 2.5 times thinner .... For a 3 times higher price, of course. But the argument does not justify any price. Also note the increase of 17.5% of the battery, while the screen grows by 10%. This is rather good news.

Virtually the same design as the Wiko Wax

On the design side, it's not Rainbow inspired leaders Wiko product, but Wax. We find some ergonomic elements inherited from older models of the brand, but especially the gray border around the frame part under the touch screen. The latter is divided into two parts: the screen and touchpad with scroll button. Curiously, Wiko did not include the latter with the Android interface, while it is one of the contributions of KitKat.

The rest of the frame slide is pretty common. Up front, a large slab with edges that still needs to be refined. At the rear, a slightly protruding camera sensor, a speaker who seems very small to the size of the craft and a matte plastic shell that keeps track of the little fingers. Unlike Wax, silver edging toured the smartphone. The detachable part of the hull thus stops at this boundary.

On the edges, we find the usual ports and hardware buttons. Volume on the left edge. Sleep on the side of right. The phone's microphone is located on the bottom edge and port microUSB and 3.5mm jack on the top edge. It is also here that the notch to release the shell to discover two SIM ports and expansion port for the internal memory (very handy given the ability Slide). You will notice that the hardware buttons are silver, on a point with the border.

A solid grip, but a runny screen

The construction of the phone is pretty solid. He did not have too much play between the slab and the screen edges plastic edges. The grip of the mobile is fairly standard for an entry-level. Place the buttons on opposite edges improves accessibility. Do not place it on the top edge prevents them inaccessible. Of course, this is taking it in hand we are aware of the large size of the mobile once in hand. Especially when faced with a G3 which has significantly reduced its size while the size of the screen is equal.

The screen obviously accuses considerably from its low resolution. The grain is largely visible to the naked eye. The choice of qHD here is very curious, even from Wiko has accustomed us in recent months to offer a 720p or 1080p display in its smartphones around 5 inches (Wax, Getaway, Highway, Dakfull, Darknight, etc.) even in economic Rainbow. So a mixed impression, reinforced by a slab that will not slip much under the fingers. This is unfortunate. Especially since it is rather bright and the viewing angles are open. However, the size of the pixels reduces the contrast, color and drooling slightly as the images are blurred.

Android KitKat without any frills ...

Main good news of this slide, the presence of Android 4.4.2 KitKat, little changed vis-à-vis the stock versions delivered by Google developers. We find the same interface, the same menus and of course all the Google Play services. The central office of the mobile, find yourself, like Nexus 5 and others, a folder with all applications of the Mountain View firm.

We obviously wanted a few additions Wiko in this smartphone. We noted the presence of TrustGo, software that aims to be as much a security suite for a mobile application manager. So far so good. TrustGo but also has the bad taste to do some advertising for some partner applications, including games. Is it really the role of a virus to do this? We think not.

For a system ... particularly relieved

The presence of KitKat course brings fluidity to the whole system, even if the details of the data sheet does not let us hear necessarily. Web browsing is smooth, with a few jerks when zooming on pages. This affects the performance of the mobile reaching the excellent score of 17,162 points AnTuTu, a score worthy of the quad-core chipsets Snaodragon 400 The detailed benchmark report estimates that the platform slide is generally very good, its Achilles heel is the display of 2D graphics.

This is true of course involved. If some titles accuse some incomprehensible delays (because they are quite simple, like Angry Birds), Deadtrigger 2 did not cause any major problems, although we regret once again the very low resolution this very large screen that should have been a selling point. Similarly to the touchscreen that will not slip as well as other models of the brand. Enthusiasts of action games will certainly get their turn.

Also on video: here we find fairly standard performance for a smartphone of this range equipped with Google Video Player. The mobile is able to decode 1080p MP4 files. MKV, as always, sometimes some problems (but less than in smartphones Alcatel OneTouch). Note that, as we expected, the speaker on the back is too small to get a good sound, not to mention its placement not very happy. Result, if you increase the volume, it sizzles.

Graininess in photos as big as the screen pixel

Picture, we find the same strict photo application that the recent Rainbow, and the same 8 megapixel sensor. No surprise then: very classic modes, rare fine adjustments to the ISO file size, an HDR mode, smile detection and fun cinema mode (but hard to master).

The result is not entirely satisfactory. Today it is raining in Paris. Light conditions are changing and diffused light. To ensure a good level of detail on the buildings, the sensor has chosen to overexpose the sky (clouds disappear), obscuring the rest of the scene. Which is a shame, because even if there is grain, the picture is rather detailed.

Even at this price, the screen quality is paramount

The entry has been revolutionized in recent months. By Soshphone 4G. By Moto G 4G. And especially by the same Wax Wiko offering us a few euros less a slide which is certainly larger, but largely worse off: no 4G (which is forgivable) and a display of too low resolution. And that is certainly what is most frustrating: Wiko that could well offer a 3G below 200 euros with the same configuration, but a screen at least 720p. And it would remain functional (Rainbow is proof). Disappointment then, but that's the price to pay for having launched the Wax.
