Review Alice Boman's EP II & Sketches

There are a handful of artists whose expression is so quietly shattering and classic that they are free of time. They are called things like Joni Mitchell or, indeed, Alice Boman. Almost a year ago, debuted Alice Boman with EP "Sketches" - a collection of demo songs she recorded at night in her apartment.

She was supposed to be a potter and the songs were never meant to be published. But the sketches ended up in the hands of small Malmo Company Adrian wanted to give them out exactly as they were, sincere melodies accompanied by the room's scratch and noise.

"EP II & Sketches" is actually an amalgamation of just the songs, and a follow up EP, but can equally be seen as a full-length debut. When other artists moving toward such a huge dish expressions as possible scales, Boman turning everything back to its basic elements. In a time where sensitivity is described as a load feels such a simple line like "You know I need the darkness, just as much as I need the light" on "Over" more challenging and unexpected than a Miley Cyrus concert. Boman's voice is always in focus - surrounded by piano or organ, wind instruments drowned out by lo-fi flicker and Tom Malmros (This Is Head) soft drumbeats. Modest soulful "Be mine" is totally irresistible.
